Diploma in Integrative Counselling taught in BSL

Course Materials

  • Certificate in Counselling Skills Course Materials in English and BSL
  • Handbook

A Diploma in Counselling is what you need to be a professional counsellor and work with clients one to one (1:1) in a counselling relationship.

Integrative Counselling means you will learn about different theories in counselling for example:  person centred counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and other models of theory.

Also included in the first year of the Diploma will be the theory to allow students to work as a Low Intensity Worker which is part of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme.  Please go to our website page about IAPT for Deaf People or to the IAPT website for further information www.iapt.nhs.uk

The course has been developed by Inter-Psyche working with SignHealth Counselling and the British Society for Mental Health and Deafness.  The course is taught by deaf tutors or fluent BSL tutors.

Training will be over 20 residential weekends: 10 weekends in year 1 and 10 weekends in year 2.

Skills & Personal Development

The course allows students to get more practice in using counselling skills that have been learned from the Certificate course and also learn more about how to develop a good client/counsellor relationship.

You will be able to watch how skills are used with clients, practice skills yourself, give feedback to others on the course and discuss difficult issues that counsellors have to cope with when working with a client.

It is important that students are able to have time to look at their own development and this will be by: personal development groups and group supervision.  How this is done is by:

  • your own learning journal
  • your own counselling
  • informal and formal meetings with other students and course tutors
  • your own assessment of how you think you are learning
  • study skills group

As part of your own development all students must have a minimum of 50 hours of counselling over the 2 years of the course.  Up to 20 hours of these can be group work.  The Counselling hours needed for the course can be provided by SignHealth Counselling free of charge. If students want to arrange their own counselling not from SignHealth they will have to pay for it themselves.

Counselling Practice

Students must have a minimum of 100 hours of counselling practice with clients that is supervised by a qualified counsellor.  Students will be supported by SignHealth to find a practice placement (a work placement) and a suitable supervisor.
