Next BSMHD Members meeting, Bristol - 24 June 2010

The next BSMHD members meeting will be held in Bristol on Thursday 24th June 2010 at Easton Community Centre, Kilburn Street, Bristol, BS5 6AW from 11am to 3.30pm. The meeting will be an opportunity to meet fellow BSMHD members, staff from the local Health Services and Deaf Organisations. There will be a presentation by AWP about mental health services for deaf people in the Bristol area and an update on the national activities BSMHD is involved in including the European Mental Health and Deafness Congress in Cambridge in November, the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies for Deaf People National Development Project and the Diploma in Integrative Counselling taught in BSL.

 

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies for Deaf People

The staff team working to deliver the IAPT for Deaf People project have now been appointed. Hazel Flynn will be starting on 17 May as the National IAPT for Deaf People Project Lead and Dan Bridges started on 1 April as the IAPT Deaf Services Programme Support Manager. The project team are jointly managed by BSMHD and NHS North West. European Congress on Mental Health and Deafness, Cambridge - November 2010

The venue for the 8th European Congress on Mental Health and Deafness being held on 2nd - 5th November 2010 will be Fitzwilliam College, Storey's Way, Cambridge CB3 0DG. www.fitz.cam.ac.uk

The theme of the Congress, 'Healthy Deaf Minds in Europe', will serve as the agenda for an exciting scientific programme. Providing a forum for addressing mental health issues and developing links between all of the various professionals working in the field of deafness, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, therapists, nurses, social workers, interpreters, advocates, educationists, deaf people, carers and the community.

The Congress will take the form of a collection of Symposia each focusing on a specific area of expertise within mental health and deafness including: Deaf Children, Young People and Families; Deaf Adults; Deaf Elders; Forensic Services; Multiple Disabilities; Service Development; Language Deprivation and Communication; Primary Care and Community Services; Mental Health Promotion and Education. Within these Symposia and the Congress programme there will be an opportunity to include papers on a wide range of topics including Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults, Addiction, Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence, Suicide, Asylum Seekers, Education policy, Audiology, Genetics etc. Full details at www.esmhdcongress2010.org

The Call for Papers is now open. The deadline for submitting abstracts is 28th May 2010.

 

Social Work with Deaf People, Promoting Deaf Mental Wellbeing Conference

BACP Ethical Framework in BSL

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) have made their Ethical Framework available in BSL on their website. The work was commissioned through BSMHD and the translation work was carried out by Remark!. St Andrew's Hospital Forensic Medium Secure Services for Deaf Men

William Wake House is due to open autumn 2010. This new purpose built development of 8 units with 132 beds is located at St Andrew’s Healthcare, Northampton. William Wake House will be a centre of excellence for male Service Users aged 18 and older with services for Mental Health, Deaf, Aspergers, Learning Disability and Acquired Brain Injury providing individual treatment and care with a person centred care planning process. St Andrew's are now recruiting for vacancies in the Deaf Service, with a start date from October onwards. Deaf people are positively encouraged to apply for these positions. Deaf Children Young People and Family Service User Involvement Day, Birmingham - 19 May 2010

The Deaf Children Young People and Family Service is seeking the view of service users, referrers and organisations who support deaf children and families about the service since it started in October 2009, and how it should develop next. This is an opportunity for services users and any other professionals or organisations to have their say. The day and lunch are free.
