Next BSMHD members meeting and AGM - Birmingham, 27 October 2009 It has not been possible to hold the next members meeting in Manchester in September as previously announced. The meeting will now be held at National Deaf Mental Health Service, Jasmine Suite, The Barberry, 25 Vincent Drive , Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2FB on 27 October. The meeting will also be the 2009 AGM. Papers for the meeting will be sent out to all members shortly. The next meeting of the Healthy Deaf Minds London Group will be on Wednesday 7 October 2009 at the Small Meeting Room, Friends Meeting House, Euston Road, London (opposite Euston Station). Healthy Deaf Minds - North East The next Healthy Deaf Minds North East meeting will be meeting on Thursday 24th September at 6.30pm at Central Square, Forth Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3PJ. The forum is open to everyone. The topic is Mental Health & the Deaf Child. Contact Newcastle Deaflink for any information on SMS: 07712 163 366 [email protected] Mental Health and Deafness Master Class - 11 September 2009 “Therapies in Mental Health and Deafness” The second annual master class from The North East Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Commissioning Unit and Northumbria University. A free event which will increase participants’ understanding in psychological therapies for D/deaf people, including; workforce implications or needs to address the requirements of the user group information on Northumbria University’s newly developed modules in Mental Health and Deafness and how to access them; enhancing workforce development and commissioning of therapies for D/deaf people; Presentations from leading names in the field of mental health and D/deafness; Focus on therapies (including Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and their appropriateness for working with D/deaf people. The event may be of particular interest to practitioners, therapists D/deaf people, interpreters, academics, commissioners of mental health services and workforce development professionals, although all are welcome. Social and Emotional Development in Deaf Children Conference - York, 6 October 2009 A Deaf Children, Young People and Family Service Conference in collaboration with the British Society for Mental Health and Deafness. A one day conference for mental health professionals, Teachers of the Deaf, Deaf Children and Youth Workers, Equality and Diversity Officers, parents and carers and all professionals with an interest in social and emotional development in deaf children. Deaf people and Domestic Violence 12 October, London. A workshop on Deaf people and Domestic Violence, organised by SignHealth, will examine the how abuse manifests itself differently in Deaf culture and how many violent situations are overlooked. It will be lead by Susan Gonzalez from DeafHope in America. Ideally the event will attract professionals involved in Domestic Violence services (eg police, legal professionals, child protection authorities, refuge providers) as well as Deaf people. Independent Advocacy Training (IMHA) If you are interested in undertaking the Independent Advocacy Training (IMHA) in BSL please contact Joy Stevens on [email protected] for further information and an application form. The course is to start in November and will run over 4 days in December and January also. Interviews will be held on the 15th October in the London area.
NICE guideline development group for Anxiety NICE would like to obtain feedback from people who suffer with anxiety to feed into the personal experience section of the guidance. This guidance is very influential and often impacts on the commissioning of services nationally. Department of Health consultation "New Horizons: A Shared Vision for Mental Health." New Horizons aims to help come up with an approach to make services for adults with mental health problems better in the future, and to help everyone have better mental health. Double Sentence - A play by Deafinitely Theatre Soho Theatre, London: 17th - 26th September; The Customs House, South Shields: 29 September; Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton: 1st - 2nd October. When Tom Fry is sent to prison he finds himself not only being punished for the crime he committed but also punished for being deaf.
