North East Healthy Deaf Minds Forum

Thursday 26th November at 6.30pm. This venue is behind Newcastle Central station. BSMHD AGM - Birmingham, 27 October 2009

At the 2009 BSMHD Annual General Meeting held in Birmingham on 27 October 2009 the new Board of Trustees was announced. Elected to the Board are Barbara Brown, Jim Cromwell and Mary Griggs. They join Sally Austen, Emma Ferguson-Coleman, Willie Macfadyen, Steve Powell and Sara Rhys-Jones.


Healthy Deaf Minds - London

The next meeting of the Healthy Deaf Minds London Group will be on Wednesday 2 December 2009 at the Small Meeting Room, Friends Meeting House, Euston Road, London (opposite Euston Station). The topic is"Deaf Children and Stress and how to communicate with deaf children, youth and family". There will be three speakers from National Deaf Services: Val Leach - social worker, Clare Bartlett - Assistant Psychologist, Joanna Hoskins - speech and language therapist. Interpreting in Tribunals Training - Manchester, 26/27/28 November 2009

Interpreting in Mental Health Policy

BSMHD are working with colleagues from the sector to develop a policy on working with Interpreters in Mental Health settings. Anyone interested in participating in this piece of work please contact Jonathan Isaac


(Advanced) Certificate in Mental Health and Deafness

The programme has been developed through a unique collaboration between the University of Birmingham, professionals within NHS specialist services and the Third sector. It has benefited from being generated by BSL users and hearing colleagues to ensure it is both accessible and acceptable to deaf and hearing participants. It is to be delivered in BSL & English with interpreters and will make use of a range of distance learning resources. The programme is aimed at workers within specialist deaf services and generic mental health services available at two levels – the Certificate for those without professional qualifications and the Advanced Certificate for those with existing professional qualifications. Both courses will start in March 2010 and be run over a period of 18 months involving 14 days attendance spread across that period at the University of Birmingham plus work to be completed within your own locality. The fee for the Certificate will be £1645 and for the Advanced Certificate £1800. Voice hallucinations in Deaf people

Joanna Atkinson has put the cards used in her research exploring voice hallucinations in Deaf people on her UCL staff page so that clinicians can access for use in clinical work with D/deaf people. Feel free to upload them and she would appreciate your feedback. They were developed for a British D/deaf population but could equally be used in other English speaking cultures. Dramatherapy Workshop


This workshop is for BSL interpreters/ and therapists who wish to gain an understanding methods used and the clinical and ethical considerations of working together with deaf or hard of hearing clients. Martin Gill and Sam Thorp have been offering BSL interpreted dramatherapy working with Deaf adults for the past year. This workshop will share some of their insights, techniques and experiences and provide hands on activities to assist practice of both professions. Participants will receive a CPD certificate of attendance. Cost for day including lunch £55.00. payable to ‘HHS’ send to Frankleigh House, Bath Road, BA15 2PB. Venue RNID Poolemead House, Twerton.
